T-Mobile has a big press conference today in NYC.  Speculation is that the press conference is regarding the first Android phone.  The phone is the "G1" (The Google-1, since Google is behind the operating system) The hardware will be manufactured by HTC, and the software will be the new Android OS that has been in development for the past year.  This is an exciting day for the mobile technology industry- with the introduction of the first of what is to be a widely-adopted open mobile platform.

Unfortunately, in the first iteration of the phone, there are serious drawbacks.  First- it is rumored that you will not be able to buy the phone outisde of the TMobile's 3G coverage areas.  That means if you're not in one of their 10 (or so) cities that have 3G coverage, then you are flatly out of luck.  TMobile's 3G coverage is highly lacking, and is very much behind the other carriers in relation to 3rd Generation High Speed Data.

The new phone will not support bluetooth or video capture.  There is speculation that this maybe simply a software limit, with the hardware actually supporting these features.  I guess we'll find out soon enough.

There is a TMO press event in NYC this morning, so, I'm sure we'll get all the official details then, and all of this speculation will be put to rest.

P.S.- AT&T:  If you're listening, it's time for you to get on board with Android.  Dont be the last company to offer this new platform, letting the other companies test the market first.  Android is the next big thing in mobile technology.  This operating system will soon strangle Microsoft's market share, and possibly even give Blackberry/RIM a run for their money. (remember- Blackberrys are for corporate yuppies- not consumers) Stop being greedy and worrying about iPhone market share.  This thing is bigger than the iPhone, and if you don't act quickly, you're going to miss the boat.  </end rant>
